Transit is working just fine … at least in the daytime.

Having left my car in Vancouver, I chose to pass up the $100 float plane ride from Mayne Island to the city. I wanted to both get a feel for the people and test the efficiency of transit.

It started with a short drive to the Mayne Island ferry terminal then a 1.5 hour ferry ride across Georgia Starit to Tsawwassen terminal.

Enroute I heard some sweet harmonies being sung in the galley. Turns out it was TJ and Nan, friends of mine heading off to a 4 pm performance at the Edgewater Casino Celebration Village (check them out).

Most transit units were full

After a 20 minute wait for the bus to depart for a Richmond Canada Line station, we were off the the city core. Outside of choosing to give up my seat to someone I wanted to think was older than me (some aspects of aging I am in denial about), a few elevators lifts, and some herding from the transit guide, it was an easy trip to the Yale Town station. Mind you, even standing, there wasn’t much room to maneuver. Two young children overcome by the “squeeze”, too refuge on the transit car floor.

There was room on the floor

There I watied 5 minutes for the Davie bus but chose the $9 cab ride to my west end condo. All in all, the system is working “swell”. That is, as long as it isn’t 2 am in the morning. The cost? $7 for the ferry, and $3.95 for transit. All in 4 hours.

So, if you are planning to “transit” to Vancouver, give yourself lots of time, be prepared to stand, and bring your $10.95.

Canadian, Eh?

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

There is so much to see and do in Vancouver, Richmond and Whistler with all the Houses beckoning. It gives people the opportunity to learn about places and countries first hand that they never would have before. It is so easy to go because the Houses are right there, so why not?

Ryan is the most Canadian garbed person I saw today.

I met him waiting in line for Russia House. He came all the way from Chilliwack (2 hours east of Vancouver) in the rain to see the sights and sounds of the Winter Games. He does not have tickets to any events but that did not deter him from enjoying what the world has to offer. He didn’t know this morning that he would be heading to Russia later that day.

Russia will host the next Winter Games and have a countdown clock outside their building at the old Science World site. When you have a chance come check it out, because you can, just like Ryan.

Olympic Fever Hits Richmond

Monday, February 8th, 2010

In one week the citizens of Richmond will be welcoming participants, spectators and travellers to its city for the XXI (21st) Olympic Winter Games. Already I can feel the atmosphere changing. People are becoming excitedly expectant as enthusiasm overtakes the past passive negativity. Two weeks before the Winter Games officially begin there is anticipation in the air.

Changes to our physical landscape with Olympic construction, new venue signs and community events are all helping to fueling anticipation of the Olympic flame lighting our island. Recently, J Malone’s Bar and Grill, a popular pub for many locals, hosted a successful “Show Your Olympic Spirit” event. Construction at the Richmond Ozone (Richmond’s official celebration site, featuring Heineken House) is visibly underway at Minoru Park. One can see changes to street signs with the appearance of Olympic venue and celebration site directional markers.

Olympic fever is in the air over Richmond. With this much excitement surrounding the Olympics now, I personally can’t wait to see what will happen come February 12th when Olympic celebrations officially get underway in Richmond.
