If you know anything about B.C. Hockey Hall-of-Fame member Ernie ‘Punch’ McLean, then you will know he always plays the game full out.

With the Olympics coming to Vancouver, Ernie volunteered – and winds up being an Official Host for Olympic Hockey! That means he is in his glory, and talking to us about it all.

Today’s Mens’ game between Sweden and Germany was won by Sweden, 2-0, led by a power play goal from Matthias Olund.

His impression: it was a wide open game. Germany took quite a few penalties and Lundquist played well in goal for Sweden. A couple of bad hits resulted in 10-minute misconducts – one for each team.

The passing was unbelievable, because we were seeing some of the most skilled players in the world. The crowd was great – some of the outfits were outstanding, like the fans from Holland all dressed in orange – and there was very little trouble with excited fans.

In short: great hockey, skilled players and enthusiastic fans! Ernie (Punch) had his picture taken lots of times, too. This was Ernie’s first live Olympic Hockey experience. Watch this space: he will be back for more!

Ernie ‘Punch’ McLean coached WHL New Westminster Bruins, created hockey training systems used by the NHL today, and is honored in the B.C. Hockey Hall of Fame. Marilyn Anderson is a Communications Specialist and Co-Founder of Duet Media.

Beauty, Speed, Beauty

Not everything that catches ones’ eye at the Olympics is made of gold and hangs around your neck, there’s also gold that hangs around your wrist – I’m talking watches.

And if that wrist belongs to Cindy Crawford, then… ah, what were we talking about again?

As an official brand ambassador for Omega Watches, Ms. Crawford has been a part of the Omega family since 1995, longer than any other ambassador.  Obviously her beauty is timeless and in person, I can confirm that.    With a crowd of about 50 people, she instantly stood out when she entered the room.  Not because of her height (she’s 5’9”), but because of her warmth and friendliness.

She is not just a pretty face, she participates in advertising campaigns and is actively involved in events and in product design.  This is on top of her many charitable events – many of which she is personally involved.

Omega has been the official timekeeper of the Olympics (warm and cold), since 1932.  The days of old saw officials using a stopwatch to keep the seconds in check.  These days, lasers, RF tags, and more tech than the Google campus ensure that all athletes are timed accurately.  We were able to sample this tech with a model bobsleigh race setup at the event.

Mini-session #2; Garrett Kato

He’s had a busy year – top ten in 99.3 The Fox’s “Seeds”, top 20 in 100.5 The Peak’s (incredible yet somehow not that well known yet) Peak Performance Project, and he played the Van’s Warped Tour. Despite all this, Garrett generously gave us some time tonight to be the second of the surprise gigs that will be erupting across the city over the next couple of weeks.

Garrett Kato just after his three-song secret session.

Garrett has a voice that stops people in their tracks. Especially female people. Glad I bought my girlfriend with me then. I could tell you all about his music but I’d never do it justice. Better you just go here and check it out instead:

The venue (Blenz on Davie and Granville) had a couple of points of interest. On the outside Canadian fans and a man dressed as a banana (over?) celebrated an 8-0 win over rank outsiders Norway. No offence guys, but they were 1000-1 to win the gold before the tournament even started. I think my odds of wining it weren’t too far behind. Inside the cafe, a lady in full make-up was sleeping on a stool. That takes awesome balance. Or a lot of booze.

Next secret gig coming soon (and video of the last two I promise!). Here are the Twitter feeds you need to be following now so you don’t miss the next one, and we might not announce it from all of us. Maybe we’re lazy, maybe we’re forgetful, or maybe we’re just plain sneaky. Either way, you’ve been warned. And remember, you’ll only get a few hours notice:
